Data Captured About Ball Flight & Landing Is Critical For Proper Club Fitting

Our Trackman™ high-tech launch monitors capture 20 data points from every golf swing. Seven of these relate directly to the ball landing and are used by our expert club fitters to understand the unique club/swing dynamics and how to best fit the club head and shaft to optimize performance for that swing.

  • Ball Maximum Height

The ball maximum height measures, in yards, the maximum height the ball reaches during flight. This is impacted by the attack angle, dynamic loft and spin rate. When comparing club performance of various club head/shaft combinations, the club fitter is seeking to find an ideal ball height reading appropriate for the club being tested.
  • Ball Flight Time

The ball flight time is measured in seconds and will vary depending on the club, distance the ball travels and spin rate of the ball. The club fitter evaluates the ball flight time, along with other data points, in comparing different club configurations.
  • Ball Landing Angle

The ball landing angle is the angle at which the ball strikes the ground. A lower ball landing angle will result in greater bounce and roll. It is an important factor in the total distance the ball travels. The club fitter carefully watches the ball landing angle for the club and golfer being fit and optimizes the data for the unique swing dynamics of the golfer.
  • Ball Carry

Ball carry measures, in yards, the distance the ball travels before hitting the ground. Since improved distance can be vitally important to better scoring, this is one of the most important data points when comparing the performance of club alternatives. As the club fitter finely tunes the club head and shaft combinations tested, the ball carry data will most often point to the ideal configuration for each golfer's unique swing dynamics.
  • Ball Total Length

The ball total length adds the ball carry to expected bounce and roll based on the ball landing angle for the club. For the driver, woods and hybrids in particular, the total length is an important data point that identifies the club that optimizes many of the data points the launch monitor collects. The club fitter compares the ball total length data for the club head/shaft combinations tested to identify the configuration that produces the best results.
  • Ball Carry Side

The ball carry side data point, measured in yards, is the distance the ball initially hits the ground right or left of the target line. It is an accuracy measurement that will vary from club to club, with longer clubs displaying greater side carry. The fitter evaluates both the distance the ball travels and the side carry—it doesn't help the golfer to hit it a long way but be consistently off target. The best performing club is the one that delivers the longest distance with a manageable side carry.
  • Ball Total Side

The ball total side data simply adds the ball carry side to expected bounce and roll based on the ball landing angle for the club. Again, it is an accuracy reading that informs the club fitter as they identify the club configuration that delivers the best total distance and accuracy combination.

In a Cool Clubs custom fitting, our expert club fitter studies these collected ball flight and landing data points for your swing with your current club. The fitter and our proprietary software use this information to determine new club configurations that produce improved performance. We then evaluate the changes to these data points, and others, when the player swings a proposed new club head/shaft combination. As the proposed club configuration gets more finely tuned to the player's unique swing characteristics, the performance of the club improves, both in the fitting studio and on the course.

Without understanding this detailed ball flight and landing data, the golf club buyer is at a loss to know which club will work with their swing dynamics to optimize results. A Cool Clubs fitting enables the golfer to make the best investment in golf equipment that is tuned for their unique swing.
