Water HoleWater HoleWater Hole A hole with a water feature, usually one that requires players to play around or otherwise strategically negotiate the water on that hole (Kelley, About.com). The water can be a lake, stream, or pond that lies somewhere between the tee and the hole, so that players must hit over the water in order to reach the hole. If the water is off to the side, but in some way poses a hazard to play, the hole is considered a water hole.
