The ideal way to hit a ball is for the club face to be square or flat at the impact of the ball, relative to the implied straight line from the ball to the target, known as the target line. If the line of the club face and the line from the ball are perpendicular, you’ve hit the ball with a square face. If the club is oriented so that the front, or toe, is forward or the back, or heel, is forward, the line of the club face will not be square to the ball’s target line and you will send the ball to the right, left or on a curve.
