In a tournament, when the tee times are determined, the weaker players are often scheduled for a very early morning time slot. Since the dew has not had a chance to evaporate off of the grass, the early players are said to sweep the dew with their clubs as they play. Dew sweeper is a somewhat derogatory term, since stronger players are typically given a later, more personally convenient tee time in a tournament — the dew sweepers sweep the dew off the grass before the stronger players take their turns.
